Another option is to get a large C-clamp to compress the ends.  A vice will work as well.  Be very careful of the needle bearings in the caps.  It's real easy for one to fall off the rim and into the bowl and you'll never get it compressed enough to get the snap ring back in.  Frustrating to say the least.  If the U-joints aren't fresh and the grease has hardened or thinned a bit, use a dab or two of wheel bearing grease to ensure the bearings stay against the wall of the cap.
 
The hammer/socket method shown will work in a pinch - I've done a bunch that way.  Just be sure the yoke is supported or you'll break off the ears.
