Hi All, Well it was kind of a crappy week and I wasn't much in the mood for a car show but a new dyno shop was having an open house, show and offering $15.00 chassis dyno pulls so I drug out the Chevelle, cleaned it up and headed out. The show was mostly import cars but I found new respect for these things when I saw a Celica Supra put down 670 H.P. to the ground (the thing looked stock,very scary). There wasn't much competition in the domestic class so I picked up first place, a nice trophy and $125.00 I wasn't expecting. Now the good part. I made dyno two pulls, the first with full exhaust and made 311.7 H.P. and 371.9 Torque. Time allowed a second pull so I uncorked the headers and pulled 321.3 H.P. and 384.1 torque. Not bad but I wonder where that 435 H.P. and 530 torque went to that I got when I had the engine broke in and dynoed before I installed it. Looks like accessories (water pump, fan, power steering) , tranny (Turbo 400) and such sucked about 26% off the motor. I didn't feel too bad about my numbers when I saw a gutted 72 drag race only Chevelle w / a 468" BB make 420 H.P. and that was with a 100 H.P. shot of N.O.S. Off the bottle he made about 340 H.P. to the ground. That motor was so snotty it barely ran to get it on the rollers and then back to their trailer. What I did learn is I can confirm in my case the open headers worked better than the X-pipe and Flow Master mufflers with 2.5" exhaust. Not much, but an improvement just the same. Now I have a base line to make comparisons when I swap distributors, carbs and intake manifolds when I get some spare time. If you get a chance to put your car on a chassis dyno definately go for it. Anyway it was a good day with the Chevelle and my wife had a blast driving it home with open headers (her dad used to race super modified's and race cars are in her blood).
