and maybe the hub of the convertor is not seating all the way into the end of the crankshaft for what ever reason...
went through this on a small block once due to the fact that the crank had a burr in the end of it......

(I'm stumped) Doug is correct about the toque converter not seating. On the old 400's we sometimes had to hit the converter with a rubber mallet to get it to seat. Most of the time they fall in but the trans is in the up position and the converter is looking at the ceiling. Putting it in on a garage floor you have to be more careful. But you can still seat it with a mallet if it's stubborn.
