There was a thread some time ago about and an article in NCOA about GM playing with hinging the smuglers box on early El-Camino's. Not sure if hinged a space saver tire would fit ?
I have a gayloard fiberglass hard cover so if I take a trip I throw in a 14in rally !

Thanks Wayne for the info. I think I'll give it a try this weekend. I wonder if a space saver tire will fit in the smuglers hole? , Vernon

Hi Vernon. I agree 100% on the unfinished look .
I used 1/4 sanded one side plywood.  I made a pattern out of cardboard.( washing machine box)
I used 3/8 X 3/8 1/8 alu. angle as a top mounting flang.
this angle wasfastened to tje littler shelf below the rear window. The sides were flush fit to the wax board side panels.  It followed the floor contour at the hump but was made to extend three inches into the floor pan well.
I glued 1/8 high density foam then the matching seat covers vinyl meterial to the plwood.
It fastens att the top angle and two sholdered self driller screws per side across the bottom.
I have my rear speakes mounted on them ,Nothing special.
only draw back is  your not able to fit a spare tire behind the seat !

Wayne, I read in another post you had a custom panel for behind your seat on your 65 elky. I have a 64 and would like to know how you made yours. Behind the seat on my car just doesn't look finished. It's just like something is missing and this is what I have been looking for. Thanks , Vernon
