that's pretty close to what they go for here as well when not on
some sort of a sale. My model is probably the bottom of the line 220v
unit. I had to buy a kit to make it work with gas, but the price was so
good at the time I couldn't pass it up. I had to open the unit up and
modify the insides slightly to make it work with gas. But I got to see
the inner workings and I was very impressed. I worked in electronics for
many years, so I have some idea of what I was looking at. Even this
smaller unit will just about stretch your arm out when carrying it, very
heavy!
I haven't had much time to weld with it yet, and I did have to take it
in for warantee repairs already. But it turned out to only be a fan,
which I won't hold against them, "stuff happens" sometimes.
What welding I have done I was very happy with! ..well as far as the
machine is concerned. I, however, need more practice :)
Man... It sure is nice to have your own home to be able to work on your
Chevelle in the garage .....but trying to find time to do it with
keeping up with all the things you have to do to keep up a home is
another story!
JD, as I understand it, the 100v units will weld mild steel up to 3/16
inch thick. Anything thicker and they won't cut it. But you won't run
into anything thicker than 3/16 on a car under normal circumstances I
don't think. Not even the frame is thicker than that.
While these MIG welders are SUPPOSED to be able to weld aluminum, my
instructor didn't recommend it. He said to use TIG, which are very
expensive machines. I haven't tried stainless.

Are you happy about your 220 volt/155 amp lincoln, I've been thinking
about getting one for a while now, it is about $ 500/600 her in Italy.
As you probably know we only have 220 volts here (and 380/400 volt
industrial) so a 110 welder wouldnt work anyway.
