I just read an article on this in Super Chevy - last month's issue with the
yellow 502 BBC on the cover with Hilborn FI stacks - in the throne room this
morning. The gist of it is cut 1/2 coil off at a time and put them back in
to test ride height. Be careful how you tighten the a arm bolts, etc., and
let them settle a bit before making your decision. Also, it's OK to use a
torch as long as you know how to use one correctly - the localized heating
of the coil only removes the temper where you cut. On the other hand,
cutting it off with a hacksaw can't be too bad either.

I'm gonna drop the rear end of my 70 about one inch and plan to cut 'em off
this winter.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Cutting front coils

While I'm doing my Disc brake conversion, I'm going to cut the front coils
to drop the front a little. (1 1/2" -2" max.) I know that when you do this,
cutting 1/2 the desired drop off of the springs is the way to do it, but do
you just measure vertically 3/4" to 1"? approx. 1/2 a coil? 3/4 coil? I did
this back in the 80's to a '71 Monte and it looked great. Just cant remember
exactly how much I cut. Or should I just cut a little install and check and
cut as necessary? Anyone recently done this?
