The vortec heads are great heads for a low and mid rpm and lift numbers. They have great velocity at low rpms and have an excellent combustion chamber design BUT IMO if you are running a cam over .480 lift the modifications needed to make them work is not worth it. There are a number of sites and magazine articles on them and what mods are needed for what. I believe Chevy High Performance still has some articles online.

Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Building a Vortec headed 350? [also, Car Craft Sept 2002..]

Raj,
I have a vortec headed 350.  Great street car head.  As long as you
aren't going crazy with your combination the Vortec heads are the best bang
for the buck.  Good low lift and medium lift flow.  With a moderate cam they
make good power.  Best bet is to take them out of the box and bolt on.  The
springs provided with the heads accept around .480 lift.
