Guys, The company I work for is not that large, 8-10 million in sales, but we don't pay the posted rates for UPS. Our special rate runs about 60% of regular rates. However, we don't use shipping charges as a profit center. I suspect that temptation is overwhelming for most companies. You gotta figure, most people don't know about this and other companies just pass the shipping charges on to their customers.

I used to buy and sell a lot of Hot Wheels on eBay but when even the USPS went to $3.00, then $3.20 (probably higher now) for Express Mail, it didn't make sense on a $3 or $4 car to pay double when postage was involved. On something that small, even non-express mail was usually only $.10-$.30 less than express. I'm sure that large business efforts get some type of bulk shipping rates from UPS, FedEx, etc and don't have to adhere to the same packing standards as you or I when we walk into UPS to ship a package. Unfortunately some companies make up narrow profit margins on shipping. Right now I'm giving away three arm rests for a 67 Chevelle to a guy that needs them in Alabama or Louisiana (can't remember now) and feel bad about the shipping costs - probably just $4/$5 bucks. I'm just going to ship them to him and have him reimburse me when they get there for the actual costs.
