Sheetmetal...was Why OPG Sucks
OK... I'm really confused... I think in the end everyone wants to know
that what brand or what place they can order reproduction metal from and get a
good fit and decent quality. Can anyone clear things up a bit for the slow
ones like me here? I feel like I'm in an econonomics class with companies A,
B, and X :P

There are two companies, both right here in the US,
contracting to have the large sheet metal parts made. Both companies are
having their stuff made in Taiwan. Even the Authorized GM large sheet
metal parts are made in Taiwan.
There is a third company (also right
here in the US) that makes pretty much all of the patch panels (lower
fender patches, lower door patches, lower quarter patches, etc.). Those
are actually made in the USA.
Trim Parts says that their stuff is
made in "America", but I've been told that it is actually made in North
America, a.k.a. Mexico. I can't prove or disprove that.
There is a
company that makes fuel tanks in Taiwan and another in Canada.
I put
a full quarter skin, a lower quarter patch panel, and a new hood on my El
Camino and the body man said it all fit perfectly. None of it was
from Goodmark. You can see the pictures at

John Nasta and others-
I was told at a swap meet
by a nationally known vendor that there are two primary manufacturers of
repro sheet metal - hoods, fenders, quarters, floors, etc. One is pretty
chinsy - poor fit, poor lines, etc - and the other was much better. Of
course, all they carry is the better stuff...
Do you have any
comments or knowledge about this claim? Where does this stuff come
from?
