Title: Re: [Chevelle-List] GM Part Numbers
John, I didn't mean to imply that 6 digits are dealer installed items. Because they're not. What I meant to say was the 99 prefix may code out to be dealer installed. The rest of the part # is description. Just as the 86 codes out to be Power Train. (Hydra-matic) But the dealer installed items are not always the same numbers as the manufacturer unless that item is installed at the factory also. Even then, the number could have a different prefix. But the rest of the # has to be the same. Part numbers are mysterious at best. It seems what makes sense to an engineer makes no sense to us folks who are trying to decipher them.
So you are absolutely correct in what you say.

I'm not so sure about that. I just looked at some crash sheets for my 1968 Olds and there are tons of six-digit part numbers that couldn't possibly be dealer-installed items (like the gaskets between the fenders & the fender extensions, and various sheet metal pieces). There are tons of parts that have 6-digit numbers. Maybe that rule only applies to Chevy. It's certainly not a GM thing.

Hey chuck, does the 6 digit rule apply to all part #'s or just the later years?

Yes, as a general rule they are.  Not to say there aren't exceptions...
