Rear ends and transmissions are definately not everyones specialty - me
included. When I swapped out the 69> wide rear for a 67 I had it
rebuilt by a local mechanic. I know my limitations :*) It's been in
the car for a couple of years now with no problems.
If it's something you plan on doing a lot of in the future, it might pay
to get the correct tools and some education on the proper way of doing
it.

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Rears, Gears, & FearsI will also chime in here and say I totally agree with the posted comments thus far. If you have no experience or the tools it is really hard to do the job right. I have access to a hoist and all the necessary tools and have done a couple in the past, but I am far from a pro on it and it takes me a lot more time then a true rear end guy. I know a couple guys who can set them up twice and have it dead on the nuts... it is truly amazing to watch. IMO diffs, trannys, and sometimes custom ecm programming just gets to be above the average shade tree's head. But anyways good luck which ever route you take... if you decide to get some of the tools, hog out some bearings to slide one and off easy and get it mocked up right, and then maybe play drive to the machine shop and back a final 2 times to get it really close to perfect with everything pressed together... The pinion setup with crush sleeve can truly be a PIA. It is just really a question if you want to kill a whole Saturday or weekend trying to do it yourself? That's my $.02Mikey----- Original Message -----From: Ron LewSent: Thursday, December 19, 2002 11:18 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [Chevelle-List] Rears, Gears, & FearsSteve;
I just did the same replacement on my 1970 Malibu. My knowledge and opinion?
Let your mechanic do it. Too many tools and it requires knowledge of the
installation process. What did I do? My mechanic is a friend who lets me use
his shop/lift. I bought the parts and did the tear down, he did the new
installation while I watched. Runs great...but feels real funny going from
2:73 gears to 3:73.....Ron.
