My new truck search concentrated on diesel engines as I wanted something heavy duty enough to pull a car & trailer. There are two problems with the GM Duramax; the engine option costs over $2500 more than the Dodge Cummings and has not been proven,durability-wise,over the latter. Another problem has been the Allison transmissions. They have had a lot of breakage. As for horsepower,I've seen Dodge trucks with 600-700hp and over 1,000 ft/lbs of torque out there. The Cummings engines are in a very mild state of tune and bumping one up to 400hp is easy. The only downside to a hot rod diesel is being required to run a manual trans. The autos just can't handle those power levels.
