Do you have 12Volts going to smaller wire in the 2 wire connector.( When you first turn the key. NOT RUNNING). This excites the field in the alt. and when car startes it should change to a positive feed.  This wire goes to the idiot light on the dash. When you first turn key on light turns on on dash and it excites the field. When you start the car it produces 12 volts. A light bulb that is fed with 2 positives will not light and the light goes off on the dash.    I hooked one up in a race car ounce without feeding that wire and eventually the alt. Quit working and I had to hook up a light on the dash. You should also have 12Volts on the other 2 wires, I think at all times.   Just my 2 cents.
