According to Guide To GM Muscle Cars 1964-1973 (HP Books)
1964 Oldsmoblie:
F-85 4-4-2
(page 158)" In late 1964 Oldsmoblie quietly introduced the 4-4-2 option for the
F-85/Cutlass. in fact its introduction was so quiet that only a single dealer sheet and lone factory photo accompanied its debut. The 4-4-2 was basically a performance package largely put together from the list of various options already available to police departments. In the rare factory literature Olds called the 4-4-2 option "a hot new number... Police needed it... Olds built it...Pursuit proved it." The 4-4-2 got its name from the 4 - barrel carburetor, 4- speed manual transmission and 2 (dual) exhaust that were at the heart of the option. Also included were heavy-duty shocks, springs and rear stabilizer bar, a dual-snorkel air cleaner and premium quality rod and main bearings. The car was powered by a 330 cid , 310 HP rocket v-8. The 4-4-2 option was available on all F85/cutlass v-8 models except the station wagon. Because of its late introduction and lack of promotion only 2999 4-4-2's were produced in 1964."
(Page 161) "In 1965 the 4-4-2 changed. the designation of the numbers changed. The first "4" of 4-4-2 was now referred to the 400 cid engine rather than the 4-barrel carburetor. The second "4" referred to the 4-barrel carburetor. The "2" still referred to the dual exhaust. In 1965 the 4-4-2 option was no longer available on four-door sedans, but could be ordered on the F-85 Club Coupe, Cutlass Sport Coupe, Cutlass Holiday Coupe or the cutlass convertible."
