When I first got my '66 home, it had no trunk, so I had to pull the tank to do welding back there- While I had no tank, I was able to roll the car out in the driveway, put a gas can under the front with rubber fuel line in it, hook it up in place of the metal line running up the body, and I had no problems with it that way.
Just keep in mind that I was not moving the car, and since it was outside I had no fume issues. Good luck!
