Ummmm this must have been common for this engine. I have a 402
(June of 71) and it had several push rods bent as well. Some of the
cam lobes look rounded or wore on the edges quite a bit. One of my valves was
stuck open and some lifters are stuck.
Has anyone had any comments from engine builders on
this? I am about to put mine in for a rebuild at a speed shop. Although the guy
at the speed shop didn't seem to think he'd have any problem rebuilding it, I
sure wouldn't like for this to happen again anytime
soon!
The guy at the speed shop said he's had good luck
rebuilding 402's, but an occasional bad luck rebuilding 396's. Something about
the block cracking when boring it. Did they change the block at all when they
went to 402? Put in a cheaper cam or something?

HI i have a 402 that I took apart, all the
intake push rods are bent, but
none of the exhaust, any ideas what would cause this?? the valves look fine
(haven't kissed the pistons) and the rest of the engine looks ok except it
was pretty sludged up.
thanks !
