GM division wants to revive legendary SS Detroit Free Press February 12, 2003 By Mark Phelan Chevrolet will launch its SS line of performance cars with supercharged versions of the Monte Carlo coupe and Impala full-size sedan at the Chicago Auto Show today. Chevrolet plans to offer an SS version of virtually every car and truck it sells as General Motors Corp.'s largest division fights to regain the image it once held as a manufacturer of fast, affordable, high-value vehicles. The Impala SS and Monte Carlo SS will both feature a supercharged 240-horsepower, 3.8-liter, V6 engine; an array of suspension upgrades and unique cosmetic touches including the SS badge. The base Impala and Monte Carlo use a 180-horsepower, 3.4-liter V6. SS stands for super sport, a term coined in the 1950s by Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov. Legendary among car buffs, the badge debuted on the 360-horsepower 1961 Chevrolet Impala, spread to virtually every Chevy in the lineup but lost its luster in the last 20 years. The Impala and Monte Carlo SS go on sale this fall. The supercharged V6 produces 260 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 r.p.m. In addition to the high-output engine, the cars will feature stiffer springs and a lowered rear end to reduce body roll in corners. The cars also get larger front and rear stabilizer bars, Goodyear P235/55R17 tires and special 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Impala SS will be available only in black, while the Monte Carlo will come in eight colors. Both will feature body-color side moldings with fog lamps built into the front bumper and stainless steel exhaust tips. The instrument panel will use what Chevrolet calls a racing-inspired six-gauge package that includes a boost gauge. |
