Here's how mine's wired:   On the 3 wire plug, red goes to the junction block (used for voltage sensing), the tan goes to the idiot light, and the black isn't used (it's for some other type of application, something to do with electric pulses used for a certain type of tachometer IIRC).  Then there's the bat. post on the alternator.  There's a 10 gague running from the junction block to that post.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] 3 wire alternators - OT

I figured out what the 3 wires are...Red goes to battery, and the black and tan, one goes to a hot wire when the key is on, and the other goes to the idiot light...but! I didnt know which one goes to which...I found a website, and the alternator and plug should have it stamped on there some numbers or letters, but it doesnt have the ones on that website...the black wire has a "F" stamped next to it...and the Tan has L next to it...so I put two and two together...black is Field(or hot when key is on) and Tan is Light, for the idiot light...anyways, thanks for everybody's help...if youd like to see the Nova, check out my website...Thanks again-
