[Chevelle-List] sanding/priming

Hi guys, I want to sand and prime my ’69 Chevelle’s body, but this is my first time attempting anything like this and I could use a little direction.  I have a Black & Decker Sandstorm – will this get the job done?  What grit sandpaper should I use?  Should the body be sanded down all the way to the sheet metal, or just until it is smooth and free of any surface rust?  If anyone could please shed some light on these questions by way of a website or your own experience, I would appreciate it.   Thanks in advance, Don ’69 Chevelle Malibu
