One of the first cars to have cowl induction was the 63 Chevy 427 Z-11 It is the best place to take in cool air without increasing drag coefficient. NASCAR used it since 60s but in later years began to restrict size of openings which does result in lower HP. NASCAR trucks use a duel air hose design to the front grill area. NASCAR rules changed the hose diameter to 1 inch smaller and they lost about 50 hp. This is according to a NASCAR TV show I saw in the beginning of this season.
