Here's
the story on the Sanderson QP1200 fit on a '71 Chevelle Malibu 350, 4 speed
manual, with new motor mounts.
Left
side:
3/16"
between the bottom of the manifold and the cross member. This may be slightly
less when fitted with a silicone gasket.
With a
custom bent pipe to connect from the collector to the exhaust (2.5" pipe), it
should clear the clutch linkage ok (2 bends).
Will
need to replace the oil dipstick (won't fit back in). I believe there are
flexible dipsticks for this application.
Right
Side:
1/2"
between the bottom of the manifold and cross member
1"
between manifold and the starter
1/4"
between the manifold and the right front brake line, where it goes over the
cross member
Clear
shot from the collector to the exhaust, two bends.
I can
get at all plugs with a socket.
I
forgot my camera (the car is 35 miles from my house), otherwise I could have
provided some pictures. Nuts.
The
question is, is 3/16" enough clearance on the left side? Which way does the
motor torque when running (toward or away from the left
side)?
An
option to increase the clearance on the left side is to grind part of the
casting away in that area. I believe it is quite think in that spot. Of course
this would probably void the warranty, and wouldn't be good on coated headers.
Another option might be to add some washers on the motor mounts. Is this
safe?

Subject: RE: Sandersons HeadersI received the QP1200s today. The flange is 11/16" thick, machined flat. Should be pretty tough to warp those. The ports will fit a stock small block head (1.4" square). As far as the quality goes, looks good EXCEPTone of the ports was plugged with sand (from the sand casting)! Couldn't even blow through it. Good thing I checked; would have been a bear to debug on the engine.I called Sanderson and they will exchange the left side for me. The person said she had only heard of this happening once before.Nothing about this header selection seems to be going smoothly. I'll check the fit on Saturday.Tom Tomlinson'71 Malibu 350-----Original Message-----
