Bill Check your fuses ( if you haven't done so ) and if they are good, carefully check the grounds for your lights. Sounds like when you apply the brakes your getting feed back from an open ground. If you need a wiring diagram I have one for my 66 but they should be very similar and I can e mail it to you off list.
