For what it's worth, (if nothing else but to make ya'll feel better), my 383 chunked me for $4500.  That's the price ya pay to live in Alaska!

Sounds like 1200 bucks difference? Did the extra parts require additional labor? nothing is free is this world. It's a little late but you should have asked for additional cost before you ordered additional parts. As a building contractor I was always bit in the butt by additional work until I started using additional work orders.  Hate to say it but I doubt if your machinist is trying to gouge you, but if I had been him I wouldn't have proceeded until I got an AWO authorization. My 454 rebuilt without the aluminum heads was over 4300 bucks.
