I agree! A couple of drops of gas can smell like an open can, but it doesn't take much to ruin your day!

Sounds like you might have another problem besides the valve cover. If you're getting gas on the manifold there's a problem with either the carb or the fuel line, and it's advisable to park the car until it can be fixed. An underhood fire is no fun!
