Good to hear the rear end pros here could help. There really is a great collection of knowledge and experiences here. You'll often find two or more folks that do things differently and yet have the same overall results - like gasket sealer vs. no gasket sealer. Case in point:
Unless the rear cover is warped you shouldn't need any sealer. If you really want to use some, put it on the cover and seal the gasket to the cover. I very seldom use any sealer on most things. Generally when I do use it it's to keep the gasket in place until the parts can be cinched together or it's put on the "rough" side of whatever is being bolted together - like the rear cover instead of the housing since its surface would be more apt to not be flat. It's also easier to remove the cover and get all the gasket material and residue off it than the housing.
