Sounds like a very nice car to restore if it's not too far gone and the price is right.  As I noted earlier, a white on white SS would really be different when there were probably more red Chevelles around than you can shake a stick at.
Good luck on the negotiations!  You might check the VIN as well.  The car is probably a V8 car but in 64 and 65, GM plants had a habit of putting 138 coded trim tags on 137 VIN cars.  The VIN is the final authority on a 6-cyl or V8 originally.
