I'm a cab driver in San Francisco. My company had the same car and it did 505,000 miles on one engine, one trans, as a cab on the car-busting SF hills. The Caprice wagons were prized as cabs and some of them were gorgeous, all chrome, leather interiors, etc. About three years ago Mayor Willy Brown's Taxi Commission, a collection of ass-kissing political flunkies who knew zilch about cars or running a cab system, overnight outlawed all the older cabs with new rules about model year and length of service. Cars in spotless condition were suddenly illegal, while any little late-model piece of junk was OK.
