8. So I came to you guys and someone said my time was off 180 degrees.
9. Got mechanic to turn carb 180 degrees -- wouldn't start and wouldn't run
properly
10. Heard it could be bent valve, rocker arm, or something but that's
another $500 or more job.
11. I have a 76 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a 350 that I had rebuilt 2
years ago w/cam, new carb-and the darn trans when out a week later
12. I want to swap engines -- no need to have a rebuilt engine connected to
fried trans and fried engine connect to 4 year old rebuilt original
powerglide.
Opinions on engine swaps are about as good as opinions on paint schemes,
everyone will be different. At any rate, here's my opinion.
First, don't go to mechanics that will turn your carb 180 degrees.
Nobody will blame you for replacing a 307. Engine swaps in general are
PITA's mostly because of the overlooked details. The main one is bracket
mounts for accessories. If your 307 has mounting holes in front of the
heads, and your replacement engine also does....you are 90% there, as the
rest is just grunt work. If not, then you have to find, buy, fabricate
brackets to hold your alt, PS pump, AC, etc and is very difficult to get it
to look good without spending loads of cash.
Now for the replacement. I am not an expert on Olds 350's, but I am
fairly sure they are different than Chevy 350's. I'm sure you cannot swap
heads or intakes between the two, so that would make me think twice before
swapping it and finding out what else doesn't fit. You need to check with
someone who knows for sure.
I have seen on various web pages descriptions of 307s being bored to 377
with a stroker kit. I never looked further into it and don't know who has
this stroker kit but it sounds promising. That would make the 'swap' alot
easier. A night searching the internet should find something. Also
remember, swapping your engine will put stress on your stock tranny that
it's not used to.
Hope this helps....
