I agree it sounds like a pretty challenging swap... but then again so many have told me similar things on mine. I do have too admit it would make for a cool swap if you are going for the corner carver/typical pro touring (ack did I just use that term?).

As much as I like Corvettes and Chevelles,I would not try to install a C4
Dana 44 under an A-body. Trying to get the chassis geometry right on that
swap will probably be a nightmare. Having built a few high-tech
streetrods,I've seen others try this swap with less than stellar results. It
will be much cheaper to build a bulletproof 12 bolt. However,it's your car
so I wish you well with the conversion should you attempt it. Just don't
want you to get discouraged,my friend.
Hope you didn't take offense.

Well Clint,

Honestly I do not think that !

But its not my words saying that a D-44 is stronger than a 12 bolt or 9inch either.

In fact its not in any way, a 12bolt is 8,875" and a 9inch is ..well
9inches and a c-4 Dana 44 is 8,537".

The Dana 44 have 29splines compared to the 30splines of the 12bolt and
28splines of a 9" and pinion diameter is 1,626" for the dana44 compared
to 1,625" for the 12bolt and 1,313" for the 9". Of course there are full
aftermarket parts like you, Mike and Herb have and that's a whole other
story compared to the stock parts.

What I actually said is that in my case its probably cheaper to put the
d-44 IRS under the car than getting a lot of aftermarket parts like
trailing arms, sway bar, disc brakes etc. to beef up the 12bolt or get
an aftermarket 12bolt or 9", even if I have to totally refresh the Dana
with a new gear set etc. it would still be cheaper for me

Why I'm doing this is because I hope that the car will be more fun to
drive with an IRS than with a stiff axle, I think it will be more comfy
on bulky roads and then its something a little different than what
everybody else have.

I'm not drag racing anyway so that's not an issue for me but I would
like to do some track time when the car will be done in about a hundred
years.

You honestly think a C4 Dana 44 rear is stronger than a 12 bolt or Ford
9"? Trust me,they are not.

Well Mikey, that's just $4000 (2complete centersections + case and axles
worst case) nothing to talk about JJ

Well the plan is to install a dana44 c4 corvette rear end, I already
have it in the basement so now its "just to do it"

I got two complete front suspensions and one dana44 rear for euro 1200
(around $ 1200), and its all in one package, IRS, disc brakes sway bar
etc etc.

My initial plan for the car was the 12bolt with better trailing arms, a
sway nice sway bar etc and tall spindles with tubular arms in front and
a quick ratio box, but that's way more expensive and common that a nice
aluminum IFS and IRS setup, sure its loads and loads of more work to
install and for sure a lot more money to be spent before finishing but
I've decided to do it.

My only problem is that I'm very good at buying parts (being a buyer as
profession), but I normally forget to sell what I don't need so I tend
to overstock a little JJJ

Maybe I should just keep the 12bolt and get rid of something else J

Well my number one turn off on it is the power loss due to the gear cut.
Second is cost. You figure that the drop in case and axle package is
about 800 dollars over here. Then keep in mind that a stock Ford 9
center section will not last long. The pinion support are very weak
unless you find a very rare daytona support. The nodular cases are also
very rare to find now... so that basically leaves you with an
aftermarket center section to handle the power I plan to put down. That
is gonna run between 1200 and 1600. Now who really wants to buy 2 of
those so they can switch gears easily? LOL I pretty much have no choice
really so I will just have to take the after market 9 and make more
power to overcome the loss :)

IMO the 12b is a fine axle... better in stock form then a stock 9" in
most applications. Just out of curiousity... why you getting rid of your
12b?

Mikey,

I remember seeing posts about guys very happy with their 9" axles, its
easier to change the gear ratio etc. I personally don't do that very
often, and I don't think I would be doing it more often with a 9" axle,
but its for sure nicer to work on a 9" than a heavy 12 bolt.

I think it was at moser you could get a drop in 12bolt with 9" axle
bearings, that would eliminate the c-clip eliminators.

Sounds fair enough.... it is getting hard to find 12b's around here as
well. If I could find one for cheap I would be all over it, but since
they seem to be going for $500 plus for junk open diffs I will just get
a drop in 9" rather then deal with the hassle of c-clip eliminators.

Hi everyone,

I have taken out my gearbox and put it up for sale her in europe, next
thing out (in about a month or so) is the 1968model 12bolt.

Anyone have an idea of how much a 3,73 completely rebuilt last summer is
worth ? it have a gm posi and a Richmond gear setup, gm axles and fresh
rear brakes (drums)it goes.

Personally I was shooting at around $1000/1200 because they are hard to
find and worth more here in Europe than in the USA, but I really don't
know.

Thanks !
