A '69 396 used a 195 thermostat and a 15-lb. radiator cap (1969 Motor's manual). I couldn't find any info for '72 but I'll bet dollars to doughnuts a 195 is also specified; I think just about every GM engine in the '70s was spec'd for one. That being said, I generally run a 180 in my non-computer GM V-8 vehicles.
