Herb is correct.  My parts book shows the spring from the clutch fork to
a hole in the frame.

Doesn't mean you have to put it there if you're not seeking originality.
I ran my return spring from the clutch fork to the end of the clutch rod
(actually the 'swivel', #16 in the diagram) and used the hook end in
place of a cotter key.  Worked fine for 15 years.
