Before we're so quick to judge on this particular car, note that it's a Canadian Chevelle and they did indeed have "SS" cars that were not akin to the US 138xx Super Sport. Check http://www.team67.com/gallery/supersport/mel_anderson.htm for a good example - with Canadian documentation and it's a 283-Powerglide. Now, I don't know if Mel's car came with SS badges on the grille (along with the Malibu emblem) or SS badges on the rear, but note the rear quarter "Malibu SS" script, not "Super Sport" script. This car appears to have the same SS396 and Malibu grille emblems and "Malibu SS" script on the quarters. I'm not familiar enough with the engines available on these, but the documentation supplied supports the claim - http://www.classiccarsonline.ca/67chevelle/report.jpg. Firewall and underbody is painted body color which is typical of Canadian Chevelles from what I understand. Car looks legit to me.
