Graham,
    this will be easier still. just see if the tail shaft turns when it is
in neutral. if not then move the lever the other way and the tail shaft
should spin freely..... hope this is what you are trying to figure out.... I
was just suggesting a way to find out if the third (reverse) lever is in
neutral or not.

Yeah, I know the car has to be in neutral hence my original question.  I
don't have a driveshaft yet and the trans is bolted to the engine.  If the
third (tail end) lever is moved forward or pushed backed.
I will have to get the plate and shiftgate bolted up to see which why the
rod moves I guess.
