Mig welding is not that hard actually.  The main point is that you are only
as good as your tools.  I started with a cheap flux core Century welder.  I
tried, and tried to do rust repair, but all I managed to do was make popcorn
on the metal.  I sucked it up and bought a Miller 220v Gas unit, and my
welding skills increased 500%.  I now do all of my own rust repair (after
much practicing on spare doors, floorpans, etc...) and most of my friends'.
The rest of the mechanic work I generally do myself also.  The only thing I
don't like doing is the Paint and Body.  I HATE to sand, but I have painted
a couple of cars in my time.  Oh, and a transmission might as well be magic
as far as I'm concerned.  I have no idea how they operate other than shift
linkages, and clutches.
