You started an interesting thread Bill! I also do my own mechanical work but over the years I've concluded there are a couple things that are magic: automatic transmissions and recirculating ball steering gears (there must be a gazillion ball bearings inside one of those things!). I refuse to do body work though, mainly because I'm too lazy to sand and sand and sand, until it's right! Pretty much anything else is fair game for me whether it's electric, welding (I'm still teaching myself), engines, suspension (and to this day I still haven't needed a spring compressor to remove a front coil spring), brakes, manual transmissions, you name it and I've probably fixed it, replaced it, or removed it, and if I haven't yet I'm sure I will some day! I know I've spent a lot of money on my Elky over the last seven years, but if I wasn't able to do as much of the work as I did, there's no way I could have afforded to pay someone to do it for me. Besides, if you want it done right you have to do it yourself!
