I tried to do an automatic once - I have the parts still sitting in the
garage to prove it! That's ok, it was a 727 for my sis's Dart - talked her
into buying a new TCI unit from Summit.

Body work is pretty much where I also draw the line. It was the whole reason
I picked up my '66 the way it was. Body was pretty much done and I could
just jump on the rest.

I enjoy working on it. Now if you were to ask about my drivers, it depends
on what needs to be done. I can't afford the downtime so sometimes it's best
to take them in - not to mention the experience and tools a pro should have.

You started an interesting thread Bill! I also do my own mechanical work
but over the years I've concluded there are a couple things that are magic:
automatic transmissions and recirculating ball steering gears (there must be
a gazillion ball bearings inside one of those things!). I refuse to do body
work though, mainly because I'm too lazy to sand and sand and sand, until
it's right! Pretty much anything else is fair game for me whether it's
electric, welding (I'm still teaching myself), engines, suspension (and to
this day I still haven't needed a spring compressor to remove a front coil
spring), brakes, manual transmissions, you name it and I've probably fixed
it, replaced it, or removed it, and if I haven't yet I'm sure I will some
day! I know I've spent a lot of money on my Elky over the last seven years,
but if I wasn't able to do as much of the work as I did, there's no way I
could have afforded to pay someone to do it for me. Besides, if you want it
done right you have to do it yourself!
