Try spraying some carb cleaner, or starting fluid around the base of the carb (not too much as to set it on fire).  If you have an airleak under the carb, the engine will begin to race, and you need to tighten the carb, or change the gasket.  If this is not your problem, check your vacuum connections.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] carb problem?

Hi all..

ok, I have a 600CFM Edelbrock carb on my motor.
It has ran fine since I bought it used.
yesterday, I start the car, it runs like crap..
today I check the fuel filter, timing, etc.. and everything's fine.
I noticed that if I put my hand over the choke plate, the idle would pick up and smooth out.
at any rate, I hopped on the highway, got on it some, and it cleaned up and ran fine.
parked the car, started  it about 3 hours later, running like crap again.
the electric choke is hooked up.
Any ideas anyone?
