PRICE: Agreed on the price being pretty good. Maybe this is what's
needed to get the aftermarket prices back down to earth? Very functional
and saves time, effort and money for those that want to go serpentine or
need to put in some mods.
One of the mods I put on that I needed to use a modern serpentine
bracket was a GenII power steering pump to match the fast ratio steering
box I got from a Monte Carlo SS (rebuilt). The old mounting brackets
will NOT mount the newer pump! So you can bet these are GenII power
steering pumps and I am not sure but suspect it's the newer style radial
A/C compressors. You may need to plan accordingly for hoses and matching
with A/C systems.
I talked to Vintage Air on mine. They said they didn't have an A/C
compressor mounting bracket for my setup, so I either had to modify the
stock GM bracket I used, or use a GM A/C compressor. He said the GM
compressor would work "although it would have higher head pressures than
what we would like". I can see excuses there for A/C not working as well
as I'd like, so I went with one of their Sanden compressors .....had to
dent the tall valve cover (roller rockers) though to get it to fit right
:(
However, remember that while GMPartsdirect has the best price, the
markup on shipping and handling will stun you. I paid over $20 shipping
and handling for a $43 fan shroud!
I am sure that this system being that much won't be nearly that
percentage of "overhead", but just be prepared and match apples to
apples on final price.
FAN: I think they are leaving that option open to you to buy a fan of
your choice, it's obviously not part of this kit.
20% DISCOUNT: Ummmm how does one go about getting a 20% discount at a GM
dealership? Do you work there?
LOOKS: you have to admit, this kit doesn't look anywhere near as nice as
what an aftermarket kit would look. Just curious what some thoughts are
on dressing it up?
I painted my brackets the same color as the engine, and painted the
pulleys a "chrome-like" silver. I thought about taking the pulleys
...and maybe the fan? down to be chromed. You can't buy these pulleys
chromed yet. I may still do that.
