I have a 454/TH400 engine trans combo and would really appreciate your help diagnosing what seems like slippage. When I'm going down the road, at say 50, in drive, and step on it the revs go up but I no longer feel the "g" force like I used to . The revs go up without much if any increase in mph. If I slowly add gas then the mph increase. I can very easily cause it to "slip"; it happens even with part throttle.
Thinking it might be the torque converter, I tried it from a stop with my foot on the brake. I could only get the revs up to 2000-2200, which is about the stall speed of the converter. So, I'm now guessing the torque converter is ok and the problem must be the tranny, or it would have happened from a stop in 1st gear. Could the tranny be slipping in drive but not 1st?
Any thoughts on other tests I might perform to differentiate whether the problem is the tranny or converter? I guess the converter and tranny can be tested out of the car?
