Yea, I just swapped mine out for a very cool, close-to-600 horse Gen VI 468 was-gonna-go-in-a-drag- boat-but-never-made-it engine ( we opted to pull the blower and had the heads angle milled ).  Part of the deal was the engine builder got to keep the 396.  Call him and see - we are in Dallas.  He worked wonders on my 55 chevy and my 68 chevelle.  Engine, tranny, electrical, suspension, whatever. Name is Keith Stuckey at 972-931-5184. Loves the classics.  Lot of them go through his place for tuneups.  Plus he has tons of parts that I pulled off my '68 as he redid the engine and bay area.  Definitely recommend him.
