I replaced a 'single-line' tank in my '70 with one from a 71 or 72 with the three extra lines/fittings. Two of them I connected together via rubber hose. On the third one, I connected another short piece of rubber hose with a loop in it to allow venting. Has worked great for 10+ years.

I temporarily put a single line tank in my 72. Didn't make any accomodation for proper venting. Everytime I opened the gas cap to fill, I got air rapidly being sucked into the tank. Obviously you need some type of venting.
