Not knowing what year car your working on... ( early chevelles are easy to get to the starter  IGN switch to de- bug)  So I;ll  de-bug from the starter  back... Remove the purple wire to your starter solenoid.  Clip a test light opr  VOM  from it's lug to ground  ... You should NOT  have any voltage or light on your tester... This is with the battery  hooked up and the IGN switch  in the RUN position.  Have some one rock the  IGN.switch  too the momentary START detent.   only  then should you  have voltage or your testers lamp. light.. ..
