A non-lockup set-up will definitely generate more heat and a stock 700R4 converter is only rated to around 350ft/lbs of torque. Even so,mine lasted over four years behind a healthy 468" making close to 500ft/lbs. The Vigilante unit I replaced it with was rated to over 750hp/800tq. Price was around $700,if I remember correctly, about five years ago.
