A non-lockup set-up will definitely generate more heat and a stock 700R4
converter is only rated to around 350ft/lbs of torque. Even so,mine lasted
over four years behind a healthy 468" making close to 500ft/lbs. The
Vigilante unit I replaced it with was rated to over 750hp/800tq. Price was
around $700,if I remember correctly,about five years ago.
