Dave,
The factory cable clips on just as you have described(plastic
tabs). The Lokar "street rod" or "universal" cable uses 2 nuts on a
threaded portion of the cable to secure it to the firewall. Using
another trans analogy..similar to how you adjust your aftermarket
shifter cable..2 jamb nuts on a threaded portion.
