Nice anecdote but I think if you’ll do a Google search on “rule of thumb”, you’ll find that not the case.  The phrase first appears in writing in 1692, and refers to "some method or procedure that comes from practice or experience, without any formal basis."   ;*)

There used to be a law that prohibited a man from beating his wife with any stick larger in diameter than his own thumb. That's where the _expression_ "rule of thumb" comes from. Just FYI.
