For "added safety" I use to forget the small wire on, in that way i
always break the solenoid isolator as well

For me, the "rule of thumb" applies mostly to starters.  The last bolt 
is always shorter than I expect, and so the starter catches me by 
surprise and comes down with a lot of speed. Which has twice squished 
my thumb on the pavement as I try to avoid dropping it on my head! :(
