If you don't have any baking soda handy,pouring Coke or Pepsi on the terminals will clean them.

At first it sounded like a battery that took a dump on you, but if you tightened the battery connections, and it works fine, then it sounds to me like you have some dirty battery terminals. Thats usually how it is, works one minute, not the next. I'd clean those up really good(wire brush and baking soda) and it should be okay.
