I've been reading this thread since it started and remembered I had a picture of the car like the one in question. It was at a local cruise night that I saw it and also in the World of Wheels here in New Orleans. I spoke to the owner and he told me he was only the third owner. It had '68 rear but the doors are absent of the vent windows it also '69 & '70 SS style wheels. I did not get a close look at the VIN tag or the cowl tag. If I see it around, which I think will happen because he's at a lot of cruise nights around here, I will get a look and/or a picture of each.

In this case, I'd completely dismiss the possibility of it being a 1969 SS with a 1968 Malibu VIN plate. Quality control at Baltimore may not have been the best, but they'd surely catch that. As you know, there's nothing on a 69 VIN indicating the SS option and the 68 VIN quoted is a very early 1968 Malibu (136xx) and not a 68 SS (138xx) VIN plus the sequence began with 300001 in 69 and not 100001. If the car was put back together from a stolen or totaled car, the state would put a VIN on the car when inspected and they certainly wouldn't reuse a 68 VIN on a 69 car. The seller is adamant about the car being a 1969 SS because the VIN says so when the VIN says just the opposite. As of now, they still haven't accepted my offer to show them proof of a 68 vs. 69 VIN sample. They're going to sell it somebody who doesn't know any better and the buyer could wind up with a car they can't register and maybe confiscated because of the VIN plate. You make a good point because some people are not "trying to pull a fast one" but were lead to believe something that might not be true, and are just repeating what they were told. So, before you completely dismiss it, what is your theory on how this 69 car may have gotten a 68 VIN? Trashed & rebuilt? Stolen & retagged? You have to admit, it's an oddity. I (KINDLY) wrote and pointed out the error of thinking and she did write back asking for my "printed source" of reference. Replied I'd be happy to scan and email her some GM documentation (Restoration Kit data). Haven't heard back but I don't think she was offended, just lead astray at some point in time. Dale
