Aluminum and steel do not mix well you get Galvanic Corrosion. You could go to aluminum bolts but I don’t think in this case you would want to do that. You could try putting a stainless steel flat washer between the bolt head and the cover, or as ARP suggested use Stainless Steel bolts. If you go to stainless steel bolts you could use your standard hex head, twelve point, or hex socket. I found this source, but have not used them yet so I can not vouch for them, but they look like they carry just about any type of fastener you could want. The company name is AMK Products, Inc. and their web sight is www.amkproducts.com
Hope this helps.

a couple months ago i replaced the rear cover on my 12 bolt with a t/a performance rear girdle. cover is alum? and the fasteners were ARP black cap head bolts. in less than 3 months all 12 bolts are rusted and look awful on the cover. ARP was no help and t/a suggested replacing with stainless bolts which they don't have available. sounds ok but could there be some kind of metal interaction going on? friend suggested some kind of grease between bolt and cover but that seems like it would attract dirt. another suggested a anode spacer between bolt and cover. any experience with this out there or any suggestions? thanks, les. 70 ss 396. |
