I'm thinking it's the fuel too, and so does my friend Rick who helped me build the engine. Damn. Premium is about $2.50/gallon and by summer it’s bound to be higher.

TO get rid of the ping, you need to retard the timing a tad, try about 4 degrees and give yourself about 32-34 degrees of total timing.  Running a higher grade fuel will also help eliminate a pinging problem.
